Episode 42: Maggie Tides on How Something is Better Than Nothing

by Nikki Parnell — February 5, 20201

This week we get to talk with Maggie Tides – an attorney, artist, mom and ultra runner in California. We chat about real life and the joys and struggles that come with balancing all these parts of life. Maggie’s daughter was still very young when COVID hit and her family had recently gone through some major life changes so she describes the transition into motherhood and the juggling act of life as, “I’m juggling an apple, an orange and a banana and someone is going to toss in a watermelon (the baby). It’ll be a big change but I can juggle it! Psych! … it’s like being tossed a chainsaw on fire…in the dark! It was such a huge change…” Amen sister.

Maggie reminds us all to laugh at the ridiculousness of motherhood that unfolds around us each day and to focus on how “something is better than nothing” when it comes to getting things done, taking care of ourselves and finding the time to train in-between it all. She is currently three weeks into a run streak which is helping her get out the door, even for a little run, everyday – it doesn’t have to be fast or pretty or long but it’s building back that mental habit of running after the funky year that was 2020.

One thing we loved about Maggie, besides all her great perspectives on life, is her inquisitive brain and her love of learning and solving puzzles. Those characteristics have guided her to get a Bachelors in Architecture, a Bachelors in Philosophy – where she loved studying ethics and law – and then to law school; a way she could apply philosophy to life in big ways. Social justice is very important to her and she is the kind of person who does an amazing job of making her corner of the world a better place than when she found it. She’s an earth shaker and a mover for sure!

We also talk about how she started running, some of her previous race experiences including guiding for visually impaired runners in marathons, running Transvulcania (which she did with her husband on their honeymoon slash “runny moon” – so cool!) and what’s ahead, like the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 which will help her keep building her tickets to Western States one day! Maggie also shares about her artwork which is inspired by the trails and places that she loves so much. She’s done work for GU too, which you can find on any “Cola Me Happy” gel pack! Her beautiful art is shipped plastic free and a portion of profits go to a different nonprofit every year (check it out in the show notes below)!
