Episode 46: Nicole Monette on Her Rise to Elite Ultrarunning and All The Motherhood Lived In-between

by Nikki Parnell — March 5, 2021 — 📸: Hoka One One

This week we talk with Nicole Monette – a Michigan mom of three, physical therapist and runner for Hoka. Nicole started running ultras in 2017 and has had some amazing performances in the short period of time between then and now. We hear about her journey through motherhood and the challenges and beauty it has brought her. Nicole underwent IVF for each of her kids and described what that experience was like – expensive, stressful, emotional, isolating, physically demanding and yet ultimately extremely rewarding.

She also told us about how different each birth was, particularly her daughter who was born 6 weeks early and what that time spent in the NICU was like. It was in the NICU where Nicole decided she wanted to run a 100 miler and signed up for Yeti 100 right there and then! I love that image of bravery and determination, setting her sights on something big even while being in a hard place.

Yeti 100 ended up being an awesome celebration of her daughter’s first year of life (it was almost exactly a year from her daughter being born and those early NICU days) and Nicole ran the race in her typical fashion… by winning the thing! We also got to hear about the recent Hoka Project Carbon X2 event and how the day unfolded for her – from managing her nerves, starting in the back of the pack, going out with her plan at her pace and picking people off all day to a second place finish!

Nicole is an incredible runner and mother and we loved hearing about how she makes those two worlds come together and work with each other! Very inspiring! Give this episode a listen by clicking the link below or searching “Run Hard Mom Hard” on your preferred podcast platform.
