The Yachats Run | Drift Inn to Cape Perpetua via Amanda’s Trail on the Oregon Coast

by Chase Parnell — January 20, 2021

This last weekend the fam and I hopped in the car and drove five hours to our favorite Oregon Coast spot, Yachats. We’ve been going there a couple times every year since we moved back to Oregon from Montana in 2017. We love the small town feel, the beach at the mouth of the Yachats River, and the surrounding trails that you can access from the quirky B&B we always stay at.

This trip was an absolute blast but I will say that we’d never gone to the Coast as a family in January! The weather was very “coastal” as they say: drizzle, gray skies, and windy. The beach that we always go to was also essentially underwater except for a few short hours each day. We love to dream about getting a place in Yachats someday so it was really cool to see the place in a different time of the year than when we usually go.

In the video below, I take you all along with me on one of my favorite runs in Oregon. And that’s not an exaggeration! I love being able to start from the doorstep and pass through a lot of different environments and there’s just something about the aesthetics of where the rugged Oregon coastline meets the ocean. I think it’s as equally stunning as any mountain landscape.

I have to apologize for the video quality. I tried to get out on the run before the kids woke up so I started in the dark and it turns out the GoPro doesn’t handle dim lighting all that well. And actually, nor does it handle the overwhelming details of a lush green forest. I think its bread and butter is brightly lit wide open landscapes (like in our last video where Nikki and I run up Tumalo Mountain).

Before jumping into the video, here’s the link to the Strava data for the run and a couple screenshots to orient yourself about where Yachats is and where the trail goes.

If you wouldn’t mind, expand the video when you watch it, hit the like button and subscribe to our channel. We don’t do a lot of YouTube videos but I do plan on going to some races this year to chase some elites around the mountains and post videos on this channel! Subscribe to follow along!

Alright, hope you enjoy coming along on this run. I really do think this is a special place in the world and I hope you can find yourself on this trail someday!

  1. Hi Ryan-

Nice work. Enjoyed seeing and hearing some of my favorite scenery. My wife and I love the area and have traveled the coastal highway and coastal towns since 1985. You morning run reminds me of our last trip to Depoe Bay and the predawn runs I took during a glorious 2 week vacation. And we still harbor our dream of moving there soon.

    Take good care,
    Martin

    1. Thanks Martin, the Oregon coast is a special place. So many nooks and crannies to explore. Love Depoe Bay too, great whale watching from there. I’ve never driven the entire coastline nor seen much of the southern end of the state around Gold Beach. Someday will see it all. Cheers.
