Trail Running at Tamarack Resort, Idaho | First Run From Our Home for the Summer!

by Chase Parnell — July 13, 2020

We finally arrived at the spot where we’ll most likely be for the rest of the summer. There is the slightest of hope that we’ll somehow still manage our trip to the UK in September, but the chances are getting slimmer by the day. So very likely, we’ll be here at Tamarack Resort until October 3rd when the renters of our Bend home move out.

Tamarack is not the Alps like we planned, but wow, it’s still pretty incredible. We’ve been blown away by the beauty of it so far. Lots of wildflowers, wildlife, and huge panoramic views. This is the perfect time of the year for a place like this; the snow is gone and everything is fully alive. In less than 24 hours we’ve seen elk, white-tail deer, western tanagers, sandhill cranes, woodpeckers, and bald eagles.

My parents invested in a cabin here when the resort first opened back in 2006 so this place has been in the family for a long time but rarely used. The recession of 2008 completely destroyed the resort’s momentum. It changed hands a bunch of times and barely held on through the years. But as the economy rebounded, so did this year-round four season resort. Construction is in full-swing again, the building projects that the developers walked away from are rising from the ashes, and from what we’ve seen so far, the place is really thriving. It’s truly a stunning location and we can’t wait to explore the whole region.

Nikki and I were able to sneak away for a quick explorer run on the trails that start about 30 meters from the cabin. I’m not certain but my guess is there’s about 3,000 feet of vert in 4-5 miles to gain the summit ridge. Not too shabby.

Here’s a little GoPro video of our first run from this place we’ll call home for the next three months. Hope you enjoy coming along for the ride!

  1. Beautiful area, great video! And the pink flower is a geranium – one of my favorites! So happy for you two to have this opportunity!

  2. I’ve lived up at tamarack for four years and have been looking for running trails. Where did you find these and how? I need help! I only run the golf course.

    1. Hey Marni! Oh wow, the trails around the golf course are great and all, but you gotta head up the mountain! We access the trails mostly from where Clearwater Ct deadends, that trail puts you up on the ski run Waltz, which you take up until you hit the Apollo trail. From there you weave your way up the mountain. Just watch out for the downhill mountain biking trails. They are ONE WAY! But I’ll still take them if it’s before the lifts open for the downhillers. Pick up a trailmap from the Lodge. To get to the summit, you have to take the Summit road for a bit towards the top, but you gotta get up there right now. It’s incredible.
